Abstract
Transfusion of predeposited autologous blood was used for intraoperative and postoperative blood replacement in 35 patients who underwent radical hysterectomy with paraaortic and pelvic lymphadenectomy. With supplement of oral iron, 2 units of
blood
could be drawn with no serious adverse effect. Of the patients, 28 patients used their own blood only and needed no additional use of homologous blood for blood replacement.
Though the preoperative hemoglobin level was lower than control group in most patients their postoperative course and hemoglobin level of 14th postoperative day were not different significantly.
The authors concluded that autologous transfusion can safely be undertaken in most patients and avoid almost of all the problems associated with homologous transfusion, especially transmission of infectious disease as hepatitis and AIDS.
